Tracey Leah Pratt

Tracey Pratt, a native of Queens, New York, moved to Prince George’s County, Maryland as a teenager. She received a BA in Psychology from Bowie State University, an M.Ed from the George Washington University and an Education Leadership Certification from Northeastern University and the Principals Residency Network.

Tracey has been a public school teacher for the past 23 years. First teaching in the District of Columbia Public Schools four years before moving to the city of Cambridge to teach in the Cambridge Public School District where she’s taught for the past 19 years. Ms. Pratt currently serves as an elementary Health and Wellness teacher in Cambridge. Her curriculum is heavily focused on social emotional learning and is taught through a social justice lens.

Tracey, a lifelong learner in the truest sense of the word seeks out new learning opportunities in an effort to bring experiences back to those under her charge, both children and adults. One of her favorite opportunities to learn comes through travel. Her international destinations have included countries such as China, Ghana and Cuba. While on these education study tours her experiences ranged from studying history, culture and politics to teaching children in schools and even participating on education panels at the university level. She comes back from each journey ready to share new insights with students and colleagues in various ways.

Tracey took a one year professional leave of absence from 2018-2019 to experience living and working as an educator in Hermosillo México. She valued her time as an assistant principal and curriculum coordinator at a bilingual primary school and tried to take advantage of all that experience had to offer. Upon returning from Mexico, Ms. Pratt felt it important to use her skills to support immigrant families in Somerville so she began teaching English to adults through the Welcome Project’s English for Parents Program.

Tracey has been civically and politically engaged in her community. She served on the Cambridge Democratic City Committee from 2004-2010 and has served on the Somerville Democratic City Committee since moving to Somerville in 2010. She served as chair of Ward in Somerville from 2020-2022.

In June of 2020, In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, Tracey co-founded a movement in her city called Just Us Somerville with a mission of uplifting voices of people of color in her community. The group quickly grew to a following of over 1000 people of color and allies. Just Us Somerville initially held several rallies to protest police brutality but quickly found its way to be involved in making positive change in the city. This group continues to work on ways to amplify the voices of the underserved in Somerville.

Tracey enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, writing, dancing, cooking and traveling. She is very active in her church, Connexion UMC and is a published author.

Tracey’s ultimate goal both professionally and personally is to do her part in creating and maintaining a just society by educating, equipping and empowering all to become global citizens.
